Liraglutide, also known as Victoza, is a human glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist used as a treatment for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). It is a long-acting GLP-1 analog designed to bind to albumin, which serves as the main molecular mechanism of protraction. Liraglutide is a modified GLP-1(1–37) with lysine at position 34 replaced by arginine and a hexadecanoyl group attached to the remaining lysine via a glutamic acid spacer. This modification allows for a greatly extended serum half-life of approximately 10 to 15 hours after subcutaneous administration, enabling once-daily dosing. Liraglutide is characterized as a white to almost white powder and is soluble in aqueous base solutions, methanol, and very slightly soluble in ethanol.
